Many cell tower leases were signed between 1980 – 2000. There is an interesting PR video AT&T released in 1979 showing some of the first cell phone calls on their network.

With the passage of time those leases are now starting to reach lease expiration. Companies such as AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, Crown Castle, American Tower, and SBA, are all aggressively pursuing lease extensions (also known as lease renewals). Many of the companies such as Crown Castle are so aggressive that they are contacting landlords up to 15 years ahead of lease expiration.
