DISH announced in a press release that they have entered into a long-term agreement with Crown Castle to lease space on up to 20,000 cell towers. As part of the agreement, DISH will receive access to fiber controlled by Crown Castle and may engage Crown Castle for built-to-suit services. Built-to-suit services entails the construction of new cell towers with a commitment by DISH that they will occupy space and pay rent on the new cell tower once it is constructed.
The actual term of the arrangement, agreed upon rent schedule, and other economics of the transaction are unknown to the public. Typically wireless carriers enter into a ten year agreement with tower companies with one five-year option. It is unknown if this is term structure DISH entered into with Crown Castle.
DISH is working on building their 5G network. They currently own and operate streaming TV services SLING TV and the mobile brand Boost Mobile.
According to Fierce Wireless, DISH just turned on its first trial site just a couple weeks ago and their construction beyond trials should take place around Q2 2021. DISH announced in a previous earnings call that they plan on deploying 5G to 70% of the U.S. population by 2023.
