AT&T Spends $18.2 Billion On Spectrum Licenses

By Nick G. Foster

February 3, 2015

Last Friday it was announced that AT&T spent $18.2 billion on AWS-3 spectrum in the largest FCC auction ever. Verizon bid $10.4 billion while T-Mobile bid $1.8 billion. A big surprise was Dish Network who bid over $13.3 billion. The aggressive bids for the spectrum is due to consumer demand to stream video and other data intensive applications over the airwaves. Sprint on the meantime skipped the auction altogether.

How Does This Affect You?

As a wireless consumer you will see further upgrades to your cell providers network in years to come. As a cell tower lease landlord you will also see more requests to swap out or add equipment. This opportunity may be presented by the carrier’s agent as a “Consent Request” however do not be fooled. Often times this is an opportunity to raise the rent!
